The right Medicare benefits can support balance, strength, and the day to day confidence that keeps you independent at home.

Staying steady on your feet is part of staying independent. For many older adults, a single fall can change everything, from a hospital stay to a long recovery to a loss of confidence at home. Falls are among the most common and costly injuries for people over 65, and the encouraging news is that many of them are preventable. The right Medicare coverage can help you take those preventive steps, and Lourdes pairs fall-awareness education with a yearly look at whether your coverage actually supports prevention.

This article is a companion to our home fall-prevention checklist. Here we focus on the benefits and services that can help you, or a parent, stay safe and independent. Specific plan details vary, so think of this as a map of what to ask about.

Medicare benefits that support fall prevention and independence

The yearly Medicare Annual Wellness Visit

Original Medicare covers a yearly Annual Wellness Visit, which is different from a full physical. During this visit, your provider can review your fall risk, talk through any recent stumbles or dizziness, check the medications that might affect your balance, and help build a personalized prevention plan. It is one of the simplest, lowest-cost ways to get ahead of a fall, and many people do not realize it is available to them.

Physical therapy and occupational therapy

Part B can cover physical therapy and occupational therapy when they are medically necessary. Physical therapy can build balance and strength, while occupational therapy can help you move safely through everyday tasks and recover after an injury. Cost sharing applies, so you will usually pay a portion, but these services can make a real difference in steadiness and confidence.

Bone density screening

For people at risk of osteoporosis, Medicare covers bone density screening. Stronger awareness of bone health matters because a fall is far more serious when bones are fragile. Knowing your risk early lets you and your provider plan accordingly.

Extra benefits on some Medicare Advantage plans

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer extra benefits that some people use to stay active or safer at home, such as fitness memberships and, on certain plans, supplemental benefits beyond what Original Medicare provides. Availability varies a great deal from plan to plan and from year to year, so nothing here is guaranteed. It is also worth knowing that Original Medicare generally does not cover home safety modifications like grab bars, so if that matters to you, it is something to ask about when comparing plans.

Vision and clearer sight

Clear vision is a quiet but important part of fall prevention, because trips and missteps often start with what you did not see. Routine eye exams are generally not covered by Original Medicare, though some Medicare Advantage plans include a vision benefit. If keeping your eyes checked is a priority, that is another point to weigh when you review your options.

Why an annual coverage review matters

Plans change every year. Benefits, networks, drug lists, and extras can all shift, and a plan that fit you last year may not be the best fit now. An honest annual review lets an agent check that your coverage still matches your health needs, including the preventive benefits that help you stay on your feet. It costs you nothing to look, and it can spare you surprises later.
